Back to School...Personalized

Oh my WORD...it's that time again!!!  My oldest started band camp yesterday, the uniforms have been purchased, supplies are stocked up and shoes are on the list...

This year I went as cheap as possible on as much as possible, but being cheap doesn't have to mean boring!  Since the kids have to carry three ring binders and they're the most expensive of the supplies I decided to go personalized using my Silhouette Cameo.  I'm on a roll with it lately so why not school supplies.

I let each of the kids pick their design and fonts and with a bit of tweaking in Silhouette Studios it was a fun afternoon project.  I made sure to use outdoor vinyl so they would last hopefully as long as the binder (which if you have kids in school you know means maybe a semester).  Since school hasn't started I can't tell you how well they're holding up, but they'll sure look cute/cool for the first few weeks.  We'll see if it lasts with my oldest after he starts his first week of high school.  It may be too cutsie for him...but for now it's fun and it's theirs.

Enjoy this Back to School time of year!!!

Something fun for my Birthday Girl!!!

My poor daughter!!!  Her birthday is tomorrow and she will be the "BIG 10"!  So I planned a pool get-together with our neighborhood friends, a few more of just her friends and my parents came from out of town...but what do we wake up to...RAIN!!!

Buckets and buckets of RAIN!!!

We bumped the party back 2 hours since it was going to be out of the area at the time, but alas...the pool was closed!  Total bummer...there were tears, it was sad!!!

So to help fill her day mom and I headed off to Michaels and bought a project for her: a purple shirt and a rhinestone iron-on owl.  Combine that with some glitter iron-on vinyl I had in my craft stores and we had a birthday project to bring a smile to a disappointed girl.  Oh...and while we were at it I put together a shirt for me I'd designed on the Silhouette Cameo.

Here's what we came up with...

We took her owl then came up with a cute "Owlie" saying to go with it.  She ended up loving my idea of "Whoo Cares?" and the Baby Kruffy font was PERFECT for this project.  I typed it all out and sized it for her shirt then welded each word together...voila!  Oh, and I learned a secret about this vinyl...here's the scoop.

I purchased this glitter iron-on vinyl from Expression Vinyl.  Here's the link straight to the heat transfer vinyl and the color is "Blush".  It doesn't come with instructions (and if there are any on the website well I didn't look...so no pointing it out...I like to live dangerously.  Ok, I just looked and it would have saved me some hassle.  Ok, humbling moment...) so I winged it!  I messed up, at least on the one below.  I ended up cutting it from the glossy, plastic covered side.  I cut through the whole thing, then I wondered "How in the world am I going to transfer and iron this on my shirt properly?"  (Yes, it pays to pay attention...lesson learned...anyway)  When I got the owl I realized that the way it was applied was a hint how to apply the glitter vinyl.  So I turned the vinyl over on my cutting mat, mirrored the image, kiss cut it, weeded away the extra vinyl, then applied it with the sticky plastic it came with.  (Ok, you can say it now..."DUH!!!"  Live and learn, Baby, live and learn.)  The first cut was not wasted, however; I took the plastic from the second cut and picked the first one up off my cutting mat with it then applied it to my shirt that way.  I then turned the shirts inside out and ironed them.  It worked perfect.  My daughter's was much easier than mine since I did it right the first time...

...but I LOVE how mine turned out!!!  I purchased the black flocked piece for Oklahoma from Hobby Lobby.  It was only $2.99 for a piece of iron-on flocked vinyl that was 9.25" x 5.5" of cutting surface.  The remaining is the same glitter heat transfer vinyl.  The little heart over our city was a test cut that my mom suggested I insert as a last minute idea.  It's perfect!

So, all eyes are dry, hearts are happy and the Birthday Girl has a pretty, new shirt.  Happy 10th birthday, Chrissy Girl!!!

Love you from Mom and Nana!!!

She's one of my ultimate treasures!

Frosted Vases

Hello again...

It's been a while!  Whatcha been up to lately?  Well me, let's see, I got busy with PTA stuff again.  I'm co-chair for a sweatshirt committee and that took a bunch of time.

Cody, my middle guy, modeling said sweatshirt.

I'm chair of our annual craft fair at the school that happens in the spring, and planning meetings are going on. Add to that being mom...oh, and a wreck a couple of weeks ago (not my fault and we're all ok...our car fared much better as the hittee than the hitters...see below) I haven't been able to find the time to craft let alone blog about it.

The Honda is the hitter.  Mine is the Mazda.  That is my spare tire under his front end!
Today was the last day of Fall break for my kids.  We had a few extra boys, which means my poor daughter was bored stiff!  So I had to come up with something fun we could do that was "Girly"!  I've had this little project setting on the back burner for a while, so I decided we were going to tackle it today.  I've seen the Frosted Vases all over Pinterest and this last summer while garage sale-ing someone gave us a box of glass vases.  Cheap Craft!!!  That's what I saw.  I had frosted glass spray left over from the Window Message Center I'd done earlier this year, I have rubber bands, I have painter's tape, and a few extra items...all it takes is a bit of time and some imagination.  Here's what we came up with...

1.  Pieces & Parts: I cleaned up the vases from the layers of dust and skeletal bodies (some sort of insect I don't even want to think about).  I found the old garage sale labels because they're sticky and round...they make perfect polka dots!  I got out the rubber bands and the painter's tape...

2.  Of course I have to show the frosted spray.  This project wouldn't even come close to working without it.  I'm no expert with frosted spray (as I'll explain later), but I sure do like the effect.  It turns ordinary into extraordinary!

3.  My Sweet Pea!!!  I was going to give her the rubber band job, but her small hands weren't working well stretching those around the vase.  So she asked for the polka dot job.  She did a FANTASTIC job applying them in a random way.  She is very proud of her work...as am I!!!

I  rubber banded both of the other vases.  On the tall, skinny one I made sure each rubber band was smooth with no twists in the bands.  I waved them up and down crisscrossing them over each other.  The wider vase I made sure I twisted the bands and stretched them further to see what kind of effect it would create.

We then took them outside to spray them.  And here's where I learned a bit about frosting spray.  I wasn't as careful as I should be to be even with the spray.  It really stands out when you spray too much in one spot.  Oh, well...this is a learning experience and a homemade one...it's supposed to be imperfect.  Anyway, I sprayed them all till they looked good and coated.  It's also hard to see where you're spraying when you're out in the sun.

Once I got them where I wanted them (or so I thought) I let them dry for an hour.  Then I carefully peeled off the polka dots.  If not careful peeling the stickers off it's easy to scratch some of the frosting.  So I did this process slowly.  Then I carefully removed the bands one at a time...from the last one on to the first...like pick up sticks.  The effect left behind was amazing!  I love it!!!

They turned out great.  The twisting of the rubber bands left a wonderful effect.  The flattening of the bands on the other vase with the waving and crisscrossing is awesome too.  Then the polka dots!  I just love them all.  Now I just have to get something to put in them and a place they can call home.  Yet another Treasure...and a memory with my daughter!!!

Oh, forgot to mention...I have to give a shout out to my sister @ The Concrete Cottage.  She hooked me up with picmonkey.  It's a great online photo editing site.  I collaged and edited my photos with it today.  I so needed the help getting all my photos in check.  I can go a bit overboard with the clicking and snapping if you know what I mean.  Thanks Sis!!!

My Favorite Wall

Four years ago we moved into our current home.  We have painted 7 rooms and the hallways.  I've decorated and contemplated in each room.  I love most of them ... with only a few exceptions, but I have to say that of all of the things we have done this is by far my most favorite wall in the house.

It started with a stock photo my sister had.  I loved the layout of the pictures...the idea of the larger and smaller photos in the collage...and so I decided to use it for our hall wall with our kiddos.  I didn't use the exact layout as above, and I'm much more precise...some would say anal...about my layout.  Here's how mine turned out:

Each of my children have their section from oldest to youngest.  Each has 2 large photos.  The top one is a close up of their faces...one of my favorites from when they were little.  The bottom ones are photos I took of them at an arboretum here in town.  Each child has 2 medium sized photos.  One is a candid photo with daddy, and the other is just another favorite of mine.  Then there are 3 littler photos for each child.  The middle one is another favorite candid shot, then I have 2 pictures in each group of the flowers from the day at the arboretum.

Then as an added bonus I had a vinyl verse I'd picked up at Hobby Lobby...on sale of course.  It had been sitting in our bedroom to go up on our wall.  I decided it would go much better here.  I love the verse:

"As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" Joshua 24:15

It is the perfect top to the perfect wall.  My pieces of Treasure displayed in a wall that I treasure!!!

Thanks for stopping by,

Jennifer

The Life of a PTSA Mom

Bear with me as I attempt to catch up for a sec...literally!!!  I have the life of a PTSA (Parent, Teacher, Student Assoc. for those not in the "know") Mom.  It is chocked full of activities right now.  I am co-chair of the sweatshirt committee and we sell them at schedule pick up (4 days sitting in the school all day long 8-() !!!)  I am also Secretary.  But it's this first one that has me swamped lately.  Now that the schedule pick up time is over I have to get all the information together and that takes a ton of time.

I am squeezing a craft in here and there and have posts planned for later, but for the moment...yeah, this is all you get!!!

Thanks for sticking around...till next post!

Happy Birthday Sweet Pea

Last week was my daughter's 9th birthday, and being in the summer I always try to do some kind of party or get together for her to make it special.  This year, being 9, we decided to do totally girly things.  So I went to Pinterest and found some "Girly" ideas to put into use.

We started with making lip glosses for all the girls (see my previous post Vaseline Lip Gloss).  We added a file (Dollar Tree finds) and made up goody bags for each.

Then I found a cute idea where you put candies (in this case M&Ms) in plastic wine glasses topped off with a cupcake.  In the Pinterest idea they were in champagne flutes, but the cupcakes would have had to be teeny tiny to fit in the top of those cups, so we went with the wine glasses.  And boy did the girls feel special with their "Adult" cups.

Then I stole this nifty idea from a friend who found these lovelies at Michael's Crafts in the gift bag section.  They're small, sturdy bags with a grease proof lining...perfect for young girls while watching movies.

I then made up a fun name banner using scrapbook paper pinwheels (some call these paper medalions...either way they're cute!)  Pss...I'll post a tutorial later of how I did these.

Then I added a special chalk board message and a few tissue paper pom poms, a little yellow here (plates & bowls), a little yellow there (cupcakes & a tablecloth to save my table from nail polish later) and the room was ready for the Girls!!!

Once we'd eaten till we were high on sugar (see cupcakes and M&Ms above for verification), it was time to get our nails prettied up!

Aren't we a funny group.  It doesn't matter how young or old-ish you are...doing nails is always a fun party theme!!!

So Happy Birthday to my baby girl!  I hope you had a great time Sweet Pea!!!

Love,

Mom

Something Old...

I miss crafting!  I miss doing projects!  Why am I missing them...because I haven't gotten to get to any projects lately!!!  I have been so busy that crafts have had to go by the wayside for a little bit...but they're taunting me!!!

I have this one here every time I go into my craft closet (a.k.a. the coat closet)

This is a bunch of natural and cream colored burlap (and not pictured is about 7 yards of muslin).  It wants to be a Christmas tree skirt, 5 stockings, and a lovely covering to a table lamp...not yet purchased or even found at this time.

Then when I go to my car these two pieces stare me down, begging for my attention.

This one's going to be a kitchen chalk board, magnet board, to do board...and I have all the stuff...but time is lacking!!!

And this is for Sweet Pea's room.  She's 9 now and is really into doing her hair and a little makeup (when I let her).  Since she shares a bathroom with Bubba and Hoss we have to figure out a way to get her OUT of the bathroom before the boys clobber her!!!

In the mean time my poor, brand new, hardly been used blog is also suffering.  It wants, no NEEDS, my attention, and my crafting!!!  So what do we do?

Something OLD!!!

So let's dig out one of last year's Christmas Gift crafts I took pics of.  This was one of my favorites out of the many I did.  It was what I dubbed "The Crafty Christmas".

This one was for my niece...Kylie (pictured over at The Concrete Cottage, my sister's blog).  Last year she spent a ton of time with my parents learning and experiencing church.  She really developed a relationship with Christ (therefore using the Fruit of the Spirit as the lettering).  Plus, she was an almost teen with a love of color, and a very large new room that needed something for the walls.  So in my quest to become Pinterest's #1 fan, I discovered the drippy crayon art and thought "KYLIE!!!".

I picked several different canvases in 5 different sizes, bought 2 boxes of CHEAP 64 piece crayons, puffy paint, and a bunch of hot glue (had to restock the stores in my closet).  Then I got out the glue gun, xacto knife, Mod Podge, a sponge paint brush, wax paper and a hair dryer (soon changed to a heat gun).

I had to make the letters for each canvas so I went to my Microsoft Word and picked a font that would be easy to trace with the puffy paint, chose the right size for the canvases, printed them out, taped them on cardboard and then taped the wax paper over the top so I could use the puffy paint.  I traced all the words with the puffy paint then let it dry.  It takes a day or two to get fully dry...so do this ahead of time.  Once dry, use an xacto knife to slowly peel up each letter gently.  It takes some time, but you don't want them to rip so take the time to do it right!!!

I took the 128 crayons and sorted them in color order.  I took all the neutral colors out and put them to the side.  Then it was time to slice off all the wrappers.  I took the xacto knife and cut away...this really took quite a bit of time surprisingly.  I picked which word went with which canvas and put the crayons in color order on each canvas.  Oh, I forgot to mention, I cut every one of the crayons in half because I didn't need them that long, and I had a BUNCH of canvases to cover.  I used the hot glue gun to glue them along the top edge of the canvas.  Once that was done I used a hair dryer to melt the crayons.  It didn't work so well for me.  The hair dryer didn't provide quite enough heat with way too much air.  So I got out my heat gun that I have for melting embossing powder.  I was careful not to hold it too long on the crayons themselves so I didn't melt the hot glue...it was a learning process.  Oh, and don't forget to cover your work surface well.  This is a mess to do!!!  Here's what they looked like when all done...before the lettering.

Then in color order I put the words (one on the little ones and two on the larger ones) onto each canvas.  I used Mod Podge to stick the letters on, then covered the letters again with the Mod Podge.

It turned out to be a fairly easy craft...with a bit of a learning curve, and a lot of patience.  Nothing too difficult, just a bit of time...but it turned out great!!!

Until I get back in the groove...

Jennifer
